Why have Car Insurance?

In the UK, the law stipulates that it is a requirement that you have motor insurance to be able to drive a car, van or motorbike.  Depending on the type of motor insurance policy you have, you may or may not be covered for the replacement or repair of your vehicle.  This will depend on the circumstances of an accident.  When applying for motor insurance quotes you can choose from three levels of cover, as follows:

  • Third party only: this level of cover is the minimum legal requirement.  It covers you if you injure a third party in an accident, including passengers and /or their property.  However, it does not cover you for accidental damage to your vehicle.
  • Third party, fire and theft: this level of cover is similar to the above, but also covers you for damage caused by fire to your vehicle and theft of your vehicle.  However, as with third party only cover, it does not cover you for accidental damage to your vehicle.
  • Comprehensive: in addition to the above, this covers you for fire, theft and accidental damage to your vehicle.

The cost of motor insurance will depend on a number of different factors including things like your age, sex, previous motor convictions, the car to be insured, modifications, etc.  You should be able to get lower premiums if your vehicle is secure, such as parked in a garage or has a Thatcham approved alarm.

Like most things in life, it is important that you shop around when obtaining motor insurance so that you get the best deal for your circumstances.  When you obtain quotes make sure you read the key policy information to see what is covered, and perhaps most importantly, what isn’t covered by the policy.

In addition, the cheapest policy might not necessarily be the most suitable for your circumstances; while some policies might be cheaper than others, they may not have the same level of cover – reading all the documentation provided to you will help you establish this.  Most motor insurance policies have a standard excess charge.  This means you agree to pay the first part of any claim you make, for example the first £150 or £250.  Generally speaking, the higher level of excess you agree to pay, the lower the cost of the policy.

For each year that you don’t claim on your motor insurance policy, you can build up a no-claims discount which will lower the cost of your cover with each passing year that you don’t claim.  Some insurance companies allow you to protect your no-claims discount built up to date, which can mean a saving on the cost of your future cover should you have to make a claim.  However, you should understand that protecting your no-claims discount does not protect the price you pay for cover – you are simply protecting the discount built up to date and the cost of your cover may still increase at renewal due, for example, as a result of general increases relfected in the insurance market or as a result of your claim.
