Motorbike Insurance Reviews
Why have Motorbike Insurance?
If you live in the UK and ride a motorbike, scooter or moped then the law stipulates that it is a requirement you have motor insurance for your machine. Riding your motorbike, moped or scooter without insurance is therefore not an option. Having your motorbike insured will provide cover in the event you are involved in an accident, or cause injury or damage to third parties and / or their property. It is minimum requirement that riders have at least third-party only cover to drive on the UK’s roads.
Other than third-party only cover, riders can have third-party, fire and theft cover for their motorbike which will cover them for the cost of repairs to another vehicle or for replacement of their machine in the event it is stolen or damaged by fire. For complete cover, riders can have comprehensive cover which will provide full cover including meeting the costs of any damage to your own bike and any other vehicles if you cause an accident.
The cost of motorbike insurance can be very expensive compared to the cost of insuring a car. This is mainly for two reasons. Firstly, because of the fact that motorbike riders account for a large proportion of the deaths on the UK’s roads each year. If a rider is involved in an accident the chances are high that they will at least suffer serious injury and quite possibly death since motorbikes don’t offer the same level of protection as other motor vehicles such as cars or vans. Secondly, because motorbikes are much easier to steal than cars – insurers therefore have to pay out large sums when motorbikes are stolen. In view of these facts many motor insurance companies do not provide cover for motorbikes. Riders therefore have to obtain cover from specialist insurers and brokers.
Buying motorbike insurance online is usually cheaper than obtaining cover over the telephone since many of the specialist motorbike insurers and brokers offer discounts if you buy online. If, after obtaining a quote, you consider the price quoted to be prohibitive or too expensive then you should consider undertaking an Advanced Motorcycle Training and Rider Assessment Course. Successful completion of the course could entitle you to a reduction in the cost of your motorbike insurance. Another way to reduce the cost of your cover is to keep your motorbike locked up in a garage overnight to reduce the chances of it being stolen.
Bear in mind that it is never wise to cancel your motorbike insurance – even when you you are not riding it, say, during the winter months. Some riders may believe that their machine is safe from being stolen if they keep it locked up in a garage during winter and may well cancel their insurance policy. However, this could prove to be a costly mistake and a false economy if the worst happened and your pride and joy was stolen. With no valid insurance cover in place you would have no ability to claim for your stolen motorbike and you would be left out of pocket. As with car insurance, younger riders are likely to face higher insurance costs as are people living in accident ot crime hot spots.
