Pet Insurance Reviews:
Why Have Pet Insurance?
If you have a pet then you’ll know that an emergency visit to the vet can sometimes be very expensive. If you care for your pet and want to ensure that they have prompt medical attention in the event they need emergency treatment then you should consider taking out pet insurance cover.
In the UK there are two types of pet insurance. These are:
- Life-long cover – this will pay out for specific conditions for the life of your pet; and
- Time-limited cover – this will only pay out for 12 months per each separate condition
The level of cover provided by pet insurance policies does vary. While most policies will agree to pay a maximum amount toward vet bills and drugs, only some policies will pay for advertising costs should your pet become lost, or the costs of a kennel/cattery should you suddenly have to go into hospital. Some pet insurance policies will cover the cost of damage caused by your pet.
It is important to note that pet insurance will not cover the cost of routine check-ups such as vaccinations, boosters, nail clipping, or spaying and neutering. These are costs that you would have to meet on your own as the pet owner. Pet insurance is primarily designed to protect you if your pet needs emergency medical treatment.
As with most types of insurance, pet insurance policies tend to have a standard excess charge which means you agree to pay the first part of any claim. If you agree to pay a higher excess you could pay a cheaper premium for the pet insurance. As always, you should shop around and always compare and choose pet insurance quotes online at renewal time before you make any decision. Remember, cheapest is not always best – although some pet insurance may be cheaper than others, they may not offer the same level of protection as the more expensive cover.
