Why have Travel Insurance?

When planning your holiday arrangements it can be easy to focus on the fun and exciting aspects, but forget a very important one – travel insurance.  If you travel abroad without travel insurance you are putting yourself and your family at the risk of losing out financially.  For instance, if you lose your luggage or your flights are delayed you are unlikely to be covered for the cost of replacing the lost luggage or for the distress and inconveninece casued by delayed or cancelled flights.

In addition, if you fall ill or suffer a serious injury whilst abroad you could end up paying or being liable for substantial medical bills – remember, not all countries have free medical care like the NHS in the UK.  In many other countries outside the European Union medical treatment can be very expensive.

If you are a UK resident and are travelling within the European Union then you can obtain free or reduced-cost State provided medical care.  In order to benefit from this you will need to have the necessary European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) – you can apply for one www.ehic.org.uk.  Please bear in mind that the EHIC only covers treatment provided under the state scheme in that particular country within the EU.  Having a EHIC is a wise move when travelling within the EU, but it should not be treated as a replacement or substitute for travel insurance since it only covers you for when you are ill within the EU.

You should therefore consider comparing and choosing a travel insurance policy before you travel abroad.

Most UK travel insurance policies will cover medical bills abroad for up to        £1 million.  In addition, the cover will usually pay the cost of an emergency air ambulance to bring you home to the UK if you need treatment that cannot be provided abroad.  The majority of travel insurance policies have a standard excess charge which means you agree to pay the first part of any claim, for example the first £100 or £150.  As with most types of insurance, if you agree to pay a higher excess charge you could pay a cheaper premium for your travel insurance.

If you book your holiday through a travel agent you could be offered travel insurance by the agent.  However, you are not obliged to take the cover they offer.  You are free to shop around and compare travel insurance policies online to get the right cover for you and your family, and possibly cheaper than the cover offered by the travel agent.

What usually isn’t covered under travel insurance

As with most types of insurance, there will be some things that aren’t covered in the event of a claim.  For example, some travel insurance policies do not cover airline failures or terrorist attacks.  To ensure that you fully understand what you’re covered for you should take the time to read the key features of the policy before you commit to purchasing it.

In addition, you may not be covered for some medical conditions you already have or may have to pay extra to get them covered.  If you fail to disclose any existing medical conditions when you apply for travel insurance then any claim you make may be rejected because you didn’t tell the insurer about them.  Travelling against a doctor’s advice may also invalidate your travel insurance cover.  You should also check whether your travel insurance covers cancelling your holiday when a relative or friend falls ill, rather than yourself.
