Why Have Wedding Insurance?
Wedding insurance is designed to cover you for a range of mishaps which could ruin your special day. Unfortunately, despite efforts to make the big day perfect and worry free, sometimes things can go wrong. If, for instance, the catering supplier or wedding dress maker you had paid money to upfront goes out of business before the wedding, it is unlikely that you would get your money back.
Another unforeseeable mishap is if you and/or your partner fall ill just before the wedding which leads to the cancellation of the wedding and reception which could cost you thousands of pounds.
Wedding insurance can cover you for a number of items linked to your wedding including, amongst other things, wedding dress and attire, wedding gifts, cakes, photographs and videos, wedding rings, failure of suppliers and flowers.
Given the substantial average cost of a wedding in the UK, couples should seriously consider taking out wedding insurance as part of their wedding plans. However, before searching and comparing wedding insurance, couples should first consider whether they have sufficient cover or protection in place already.
For instance, if you use a credit card to purchase items or services between £100 and £30,000 then you receive automatic protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This means you can claim your money back from the credit card company or the retailer if there is a problem with the goods and services you have paid for upfront before the wedding. So if the caterer or wedding dress maker you paid money to upfront goes out of business then you should be protected – so long as you used a credit card.
In addition, couples getting married should review the cover available under any existing home insurance policy they have. For instance some insurers automatically increase the cover available under the contents part of the policy usually one month before and one month after the wedding to cover wedding gifts and items purchased for the wedding. Couples should check with their home insurer if they’re unsure what cover they already have.
